Hispanics currently constitute the largest minority group in the U.S. with Latinos representing 12% of the population, according to U.S. Census 2000. By 2050, some estimates project that Latinos will comprise 25% of the U.S. population.

For medical professionals, addressing this demographic shift and developing Spanish-language skills have become essential for effective communication and treatment of Latino patients. To meet the need for linguistic training and cultural sensitivity, CPI offers three custom-designed Spanish courses for medical professionals. These courses provide language study focused on grammar and conversation, coupled with special attention to patient role play and dialogues related to relevant cultural issues.

Each of the three Medical Spanish courses are two weeks in length. Winter Session participants have the opportunity to experience two distinct regions of Costa Rica, with the first at CPI Monteverde and the second at CPI Flamingo. Summer Session I spends two weeks at CPI Monteverde, while Session II is held at CPI Flamingo. The Summer Sessions are scheduled consecutively, allowing students to continue their studies for up to four weeks without interruption.

The third course is a special three-week seminar at CPI Heredia. The course includes Spanish classes specifically designed for the medical professional, as well as six visits to local hospitals, clinics and/or health posts to observe Costa Rican medical techniques and methods.
